Coming Soon: You are Not Alone

“You Are Not Alone” is the third collaboration between Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, and this novel lives up to all of the hype of it being one of the best psychological thrillers for this year (decade?).

Shay Miller has turned her passion for numbers and statistics into a career. But between jobs, with a best friend busy with a new baby, and living with a guy who she wishes could be something more, she is feeling at a loss. While working as a temp, she searches for a new gig while trying to avoid hanging out at the apartment whenever her roommate/crush is getting closer to his girlfriend. Waiting for the subway one morning, a young woman in a green polka dotted dress catches her eye. Before realizing what is about to happen, Shay witnesses the woman, Amanda, jump in front of an approaching train. Traumatized, Shay becomes obsessed with Amanda, who she was, and what led her to make this tragic choice.   Shay comprehends this loss by gathering statistics about this woman and as she does, her path crosses with Cassandra and Jane, gorgeous sisters who may have a connection to Amanda. Cassandra and Jane lead a group of women who are strong and assertive, characteristics Shay would like to embody.

In Shay's obsessive search for more information (data!) about this woman, she comes into contact with this Cassandra and Jane’s group. Shay would love to have friends like these women and after Cassandra and Jane meet and embrace Shay, for the first time she feels like she could belong. Good things start happening for Shay, and Shay begins feeling confident and strong with their embrace of friendship.

If you are expecting thing to work well for Shay long term, then you have never read a Hendricks/Pekkanen novel. Without resorting to predictability, Shay’s relationship with Cassandra and Jane send the reader on a turbulent journey; just when you expect the novel to resolve itself, the authors plan a few final twists.

I'd like to thank NetGalley for providing me an advanced copy for my unbiased review. "You Are Not Alone "is expected to be published by St. Martin’s Press on March 3, 2020. For additional information, please see: You Are Not Alone
